CONTACT STREETS, TAKE 5: Opening Night Reflections | Darrell Anderson

Whew—what a night!

First off, let me say this from the bottom of my big ol’ painter’s heart: thank you. To each and every soul who showed up, showed out, and showed love at the opening of Streets, Take 5—you made it a moment I’ll carry with me always.

Now I been making art for a long time. And to see my work lit up on the walls of the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library, right here in Five Points—, to those who know—that’s not just a milestone, that’s a homecoming. I saw faces I’ve known for 40 years… folks who remember when I was drawing’ sketches on the stoop, and new folks who just discovered what I do. All of you? Family now.

The night had a rhythm. Live jazz floated through the room, Thank you to my friends Purnell Steen and Voghn Regensburger. Dancers from Cleo Parker Robinson moved like memories—full of fire and grace. And the stories? Lord, the stories were rich. That’s the magic of this neighborhood. Every corner got a sound. Every sidewalk got a story.

This show runs through September 27, and we ain’t done yet. More events are comin’. More chances to connect, reflect, and celebrate the soul of this place we call home.

Shout out to our partners at Denver Arts & Venues for putting power behind the people, and deep gratitude to the good folks of Five Points—past, present, and future—for holding it down and lifting us up.

Now scroll on down and take a stroll through our photo gallery. These flicks ain’t just images—they’re living proof that community is alive and kickin’.

Peace, paint, and purpose,
Darrell
